It is our great pleasure to report a new gift by Nick Ervin which will enrich our library’s holdings in early travel to Crete. The donation includes the following:

Sieber’s Travels in the Island of Crete (in the year 1837) with many interesting notes by a previous owner, M. Manarolis. (Fig. 1)

B. Taylor’s Travels in Greece and Russia with an Excursion to Crete (1859)

Perrot’s French travelogue from 1867 entitled L’ile de Crete

C. Edwardes Letters from Crete (written during the spring of 1886)

Gertrude H. Begg’s The Four in Crete (1915), which was featured in a blog by C. Richter (https://nataliavogeikoff.com/2019/12/11/the-four-in-crete-a-travel-book-leads-to-an-archival-adventure/) (Fig. 2) and

R. Brewster’s 1939 travelogue The Island of Zeus. Wanderings in Crete the author of which features in another blog by N. Vogeikoff-Brogan (https://nataliavogeikoff.com/2021/01/06/the-life-and-times-of-a-dilletante-ralph-henry-brewster/).

This gift follows a major donation last summer of more than 70 early monographs on the archaeology of Crete (all printed before WW II) and dozens more books purchased on behalf of the library this past year. Nick also provided funding for this year’s Seager fellowship. In April, Nick had the chance to visit the Study Center and the sites (Fig. 3) where our members are working — in essence producing his own travelog. We were all struck by his passion for the Greek past and look forward to his return next summer.
