The members and staff of the INSTAP Study Center for East Crete bid
farewell to a great archaeologist, Yannis Tzedakis, and send sincere
condolences to his family and many friends.

Throughout his career, he held many positions, including director of the
West Cretan Ephorate of Antiquities, where he oversaw many excavations,
the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological Service of the
Cyclades, and the Paleoanthropological-Speleological Archaeological
Service, as well as general director of Antiquities for the Ministry of
Culture. He founded the Department of Educational Programs of the Ministry
of Culture and the Lithos Center while also serving as president of the
ICOM ICMAH (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Archaeology
and History). He was a founding member of the Historical, Folklore and
Archaeological Society of Crete and worked tirelessly to ensure that the
old cities of Chania and Rethymnon became protected historical monuments,
thus saving them from uncontrolled development.

In short, his long and wide-ranging career positively affected many
archaeologists in a variety of ways. He will be fondly remembered and
greatly missed.
